February is the last full month of winter. I know a lot of people are excited for Spring (me included!), but I’m trying to learn to love February more. It’s one of those natural months for pause between the whirlwind of the cozy holidays and the push toward warm days, gardening, and Spring holidays.
This month’s wartime recipe that I’m sharing is touted as a “winter dessert”, but if you notice the axe decoration, it’s a nod to ol’ George Washington’s birthday. I would also argue that anything with chocolate and cherry is a great candidate for a Valentine’s dessert.
Cherry Log is a plain cake with lemon flavoring rolled up with an almond cherry filling and chocolate butter icing. There’s also another cherry recipe in the corner for Cherry Puff which is a much easier twist using the same cake batter and cherry filling recipe for the Cherry Log. I think that’s quite clever!
These recipes come from the February 1942 issue of Farm Journal and Farmer’s Wife magazine. I’ve shared this cover a number of times on Instagram, but I can’t get over how hilarious it is! Stuart Graves did an amazing job on the illustration.
What are your favorite recipes? I’d love to hear what kinds of yummy festive February treats you’re making this month!
