I’ve written previously about how much in love I am with the American Cookery magazines from WWII. This March 1942 issue is no different, and it’s especially awesome because St. Patrick’s-themed magazine covers were not very common then.
So in honor of my Irish heritage going back to my Irish immigrant great-great-great grandparents Margaret & John Shortal, we’re taking a look at the cover feature: Shamrock Cookies — with a bonus comparative newspaper recipe.
Right off the bat we can see it’s a super rich cookie (and no doubt delicious!) with the entire cup of butter, cup of sugar, and 2 eggs. Four cups of flour means it’s going to make a lot. I really can’t see how you could go wrong with this recipe. Yum! The only downside is that it’s not very easy on the pocketbook.
Our second recipe comes from a Massachusetts newspaper. It’s funny that it mentions the option to cut the cookies into “Irish pipes”. Every leprechaun I know is fond of his clay pipe, so it makes sense to me! ;-)
This recipe is much more shortage/ration friendly. (It looks like it’s saying 1-2 cups of butter, but it’s 1/2 cup.) It’s also got lemon juice and nutmeg for some fantastic flavoring. This recipe also makes a lot. 3-5 dozen!
I’d totally try both of these recipes, and I probably will! Now I just need to bust out my shamrock cookie cutter.
Here’s an extra bonus photo I took of a leprechaun on a trip to the Isle of Skye in Scotland when I was a college freshman. (Please don’t ask me what year. lol) I’m not sure what he was doing in Scotland. Maybe visiting the other fairies in Faery Glen? ;-)
Shamrock cookie cutters! Why don't I have any?!! I need to get some and try the recipes. Have you made the recipes yet?
