Peppermint Stick Milk Shake
Easy, thrifty, and delicious - everything you want in a vintage milkshake.
Introducing recipe #2 for my Wartime Christmas Peppermint Party mini series!
Thank goodness, this recipe was a success. Given my track record with newspaper recipes lately, I’ve been worried I’d keep finding duds. Luckily, that was not the case for this yummy recipe for Peppermint Stick Milk Shakes! It’s touted as a great summer recipe for a hot day, and I’m sure it is. But it’s just as tasty and festive for a Christmas party or winter get-together.

I love that this milkshake is described as deserving a “definite place in wartime entertaining” and that it’s perfect for an “informal lunch for the ‘girls’ or for an evening get-together.” Really, it’s a great drink for any fun occasion.
Making the milkshake is simple and fairly quick. The biggest commitment is waiting for the peppermint candies to dissolve in a cup of milk. I cut the recipe in half so I wouldn’t be tempted to ingest so many milkshakes. lol
I couldn’t find peppermint sticks, so I used those large, individually wrapped puffed Christmas mints that melt in your mouth. The crushed candies melted pretty quickly in the milk with a few stirs. Not all of it dissolved, but I was in a hurry so I strained out the larger bits that were left.

After that you pour the peppermint milk “syrup” into the rest of the milk and stir. Pour some of the mixture into a glass, add a scoop of ice cream and there you go! (You can even get creative with the ice cream. I used vanilla, but chocolate would obviously be amazing too.) You’ll probably notice that this doesn’t resemble modern milkshakes. I definitely can’t hold it over my head upside-down. Ha! However, it’s a very thrifty wartime version. It needs less ice cream and most of its sweetness comes from dissolved candy, so no extra added sugar. Brilliant!
I took a bit of liberty with the decoration so it would be less summer and more Christmas. Their suggestion of grating chocolate over the top is a good one, but I grabbed a sprig of peppermint from my yard and tucked a few frozen red currants on there for a holly vibe. It turned out so cute!
I hope you give this recipe a try. It doesn’t use very many ingredients and it’s an easy one for kids to make themselves since it doesn’t even require any cooking.
Happy Milkshaking!
This is gorgeous!! And I love the affirmation that milkshakes deserve a place in wartime entertaining. Amazing.
