I made Chocolate Pinwheels in a previous Victory Kitchen Christmas, but this year I thought it would be fun to make a “candy cane” inspired version using the same recipe! I swapped out the chocolate for 1 tsp. peppermint extract. To the half the dough I added a bunch of food dye gel until it was the shade I wanted.
When they were fresh out of the oven, as soon as I took a bite, it immediately reminded me of the 1970s Better Crocker recipe for Candy Cake Cookies that you dust in crushed peppermint candies. I grew up with those and they are so good. (And at my kids’ request I did dust half of these cookies in crushed peppermints. lol) Yum!
I will be honest, though. This dough is not easy to work with. Chilling is important, and then making sure it doesn’t stick while rolling it out is also a challenge. My dough may have needed a touch more flour.
This recipe comes from the Royal Cook Book from 1940.
Join me tomorrow for Day 10!
Another great recipe. If I get time between now and Christmas I'll give this a go.
Good idea to try peppermint. Yum! They sound delicious!
