It is my opinion that one can never have too many beverage recipes around the holiday. We’re not alcoholic drinkers in our home, so any time I come across a non-alcoholic holiday drink, I’m always excited to give it a try. My oldest son is a huge fan of juice blend recipes, so he’s a big supporter of these experiments, and he’s the first one I ask for an opinion.
I found this recipe in the El Paso Times newspaper from December 18, 1943 found via Newspapers.com. I love that it says “Point-rationed items are starred.” And what’s the thing that is starred? Pineapple juice! It makes sense because I believe the mainland U.S. got most of its pineapples from Hawaii at that time, and shipping was greatly reduced in the middle of the war.
Vintage drink recipes are usually pretty simple and this was no exception. You simmer cider with cloves and salt, then combine it with the juices, serving it warm. That’s it! I thought it was a very cozy drink. The spices are subtle. Apple, pineapple and orange were the most distinctive flavors. It’s a great drink to serve guests or to enjoy while snuggled up under a blanket with a book or favorite movie!
Join me tomorrow for Day 9!
Yum, another one for my Yule menu!
Yum! This sounds really good!
