It’s been a little quiet here on my Substack only because I’m heading into the final weeks of my school semester, I’ve been busy baking for my yearly Victory Kitchen Christmas recipe swap on Instagram, and I’ve been rushing to get in a bunch of research for my next podcast installment: a special holiday episode. Whew!
I’ve been finding some fantastic images, especially in the newspapers, so I thought I’d share a few of them with you here!
I love seeing wartime holiday recipes. (Thus my yearly recipe swap tradition on Instagram, now in it’s 4th year!) There are so many fun ideas with festive names like that Yule Crunch. Plus, if you’re looking to reduce sugar while still using whole food ingredients, wartime recipes can be a great solution!
I love cranberry sauce, but I’m not sure what to think of these “salads”. lol
This ad mentions some interesting candy. “Broken Mix” and “Plastic Mix”. Hmm…. I’m not quite sure what that means!
This article hints at one of the things I’ll be talking about in my episode: wartime Christmas tree shortages!
I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. Keep an eye out for my new episode and all new wartime recipes coming next month!
Oh Sarah, this is so festive!! Christmas tree shortages...yet another element that would have never occurred to me, had you not brought it up.
I'm uncertain about the cranberry trees, but also intrigued! haha!
I love this glimpse into a Wartime Christmas. It feels so distant and nostalgic, yet I think of my dad and his siblings and my grandparents living through this, and it feels a lot closer. Also, I'd try the cranberry Christmas trees!
